The client’s vision for this commercial rooftop terrace, located in downtown Toronto, was to create an area that would be suitable for both corporate gatherings and daily employee use. As the terrace was visible from surrounding high-rise buildings, it was critical for its final design to hold aesthetic appeal from many angles.
To add interest to the terrace, a large ellipse-shaped stone planter was used as a focal feature. Large portable planters were also positioned to hold large flowering trees, in order to add vertical interest and seasonal colour. To provide stark background contrast to the green vegetation when viewed from above, as well as to help minimize heat absorption, light-coloured pre-cast pavers were used. Moveable specialty site furnishings were chosen to provide seating areas that could be repositioned as desired.
No project comes without its challenges, and this was no exception: ILI Design Group collaborated with engineers and architects to ensure that variables such as high winds and the weight of materials had been accounted for. Our team also worked tirelessly with the help of skilled crane operators to move all necessary materials to the job site in a timely manner, without compromising the safety of pedestrian and vehicular traffic below.
This hard work won ILI a 2006 Landscape Ontario Award of Excellence.
