Luxury Retreat
The ILI Design Group was tasked with undertaking and managing the landscape construction of this new Muskoka retreat.
Negative-Edge Pool
The site was prepared by blasting the natural granite bedrock to form a ledge. The residence was then constructed centrally on the site. To the east of the residence, a poured-in-place, negative edge concrete pool was constructed above an underground concrete bunker. This bunker conveniently houses the pool equipment and provides storage for the clients.
Multi-level Patios
Surrounding the pool and the residence, concrete slabs were poured and granite tiles were laid to create multilevel patios. These patios, along with the steep grades along the lakeside of the residence, necessitated the installation of custom iron and glass railings between stone pillars.
A place to play
On the west side of the site, a sport court surface was created on top of a concrete garage. Enclosed by chain-link fencing, this elevated “sky-court” offers a stunning setting for recreational play.
Beautiful and Practical Boat Dock
To permit easy access between the garage area and a newly constructed boat dock, natural Muskoka granite steps were installed. Constructed of steel and surfaced with natural wood, this gorgeous dock boasts three boat slips as well as a built-in umbrella and barbecue. It is also shaped to provide a protected swim area along the shore.
Thousands of trees and shrubs
Working with arborists, engineers and planners, a conscious effort was made to implement a storm-water management system and restorative or indigenous planting plans for the entire site. Throughout the construction phase, ILI’s Landscape Development Team used salvaged blast rock to create “planting pockets” on the steep slopes. These pockets allowed for the installation of hundreds of lush trees, as well as a veritable plant palette of thousands of perennials and shrubs.
